Mary Shoulder ACTIVE

Are you keen to enhance what you have to offer the active adult with a shoulder problem?

Would you like to increase the depth of your understanding of the shoulder complex in this population?

Are you keen to learn from highly experienced Specialist Shoulder Physiotherapist, Dr Mary Magarey, who holds Fellowships in both Musculoskeletal and Sports & Exercise Physiotherapy, and who can provide you with in-depth, critically considered insights into the complexity of the shoulder complex, how it functions in normal circumstances and what goes wrong when it doesn’t?

What does the course offer?

On the basis of improved understanding and increased depth of clinical reasoning in the context of the shoulder complex, this course will provide you with strategies, both reasoning-based and physical/practical, to enhance the assessment and management you will be able to provide to those active adults who seek your help with problems associated with the shoulder complex.

While acknowledging the very important biopsychosocial model of patient care, the focus of this course is on the ‘bio’ aspects of management of the shoulder complex.

The course is ideal for;

  • Any physiotherapist treating adult clients' shoulder pain
  • Those physiotherapists working through the experiential or academic pathways to titled membership
  • Those physiotherapists undertaking the Australian College of Physiotherapists Specialisation Training Program in either Musculoskeletal or Sports Physiotherapy.

Goals

Participants will leave the course with an improved understanding of the anatomy and function of the shoulder joint complex, and how to develop clinically reasoned management approaches.

The focus of this weekend's course will be on the examination and rehabilitation of your 'everyday' athlete. Case studies will be used extensively to illustrate the integration of theory into clinical practice.

Course outline:

  • A contemporary review of functionally relevant anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder complex. The shoulder complex includes consideration of
    • The glenohumeral, acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints and associated soft tissue structures
    • The rotator cuff muscles, tendons and associated bursae
    • The axioscapular and scapulohumeral biomechanics and relevant structures.
  • A review of relevant examination in the context of an understanding of the anatomy and function of the shoulder complex. This examination review will be presented within the context of relevant case studies with a strong emphasis on clinical reasoning.
  • Discussion of the philosophies behind the approach to the management of the shoulder complex, with a focus on the management of movement impairments in preference to a biomedical diagnostic focus.
  • Practical sessions related to examination and management strategies of a range of case studies that include consideration of context and relevant function. These case studies include:
    • The dislocated shoulder
    • Disorders of the overhead athlete
    • Rotator cuff related shoulder pain in different contexts
    • Problems associated with the shoulder in the ‘gym junkie’

An opportunity to gain unique insights from a clinician with both MSK and Sports Specialisation qualifications, and who has worked with all levels of athletes. The focus of this weekend's course will be on the examination and rehabilitation of your 'everyday' active client. Case studies will be used extensively to illustrate the integration of theory into clinical practice.
