This workshop will cover the common patterns of pelvic posturo-movement dysfunction seen in pain populations. This will also examine many of the misunderstandings around ‘lumbar neutral spine’ and pelvic floor function. The workshop will focus upon re-establishing the basic foundations of lumbo-pelvic control – the Pelvic Fundamental Patterns. These play an important role in initiating and controlling movement from the base of the spine and the pelvis/hip. Their reintegration into functional patterns of movement is basic for effective spinal rehabilitation and more healthy control.

Along with the Upper Quadrant Course, this course forms one of the two 'core' units of the Mulligan Concept Program. This 2-day practical workshop provides clinical reasoning strategies and detailed instruction on the unique examination and treatment techniques developed by New Zealand physiotherapist Brian Mulligan. The Mulligan Concept of examination and treatment is one of the most popular approaches used in manual treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Presented by Mr. Mark Oliver (certified Mulligan concepts teacher), Mark has presented Mulligan courses for more than 25 years years and assisted Brian on his courses throughout the world on numerous occasions.

This module examines the common patterns of dysfunctional posturo-movement control in the pelvic/hip girdle and the lower spine – and how these result in common patterns of joint and myofascial dysfunction which underpin lower quadrant pain disorders. Simple posturo-movement assessment points the way to specific joint and myofascial assessment - and an ensuing treatment approach which involves tailored, complimentary manual and movement therapy for restoring joint and neuro-myo-fascial function in the lumbo-pelvic–hip region. The Fundamental Patterns of the axis and pelvis will be introduced. These basic motor patterns are usually ‘missing in action’ in lumbo-pelvic pain populations. The exercise therapy in this module will involve their correct re-establishment and re-integration into functional patterns of movement and various therapeutic exercises which serve to improve the integrated function between breathing and posturo-movement control of the trunk, and control of the pelvis/hips. The patient is assisted in self-care - to move out of pain and gain greater freedom of movement.
An introductory evening lecture before the workshop commences provides a broad over-view of the approach.

This workshop will highlight common patterns of upper spinal/quadrant movement dysfunction which are commonly seen in pain populations. You will gain unique insights into shoulder function and the important role of the Head and Shoulder Fundamental Patterns in and initiating and controlling healthy patterns of movement in the upper spine and proximal limb girdle. Re-establishing these patterns and incorporating them into functional patterns of control is important for effective rehabilitation of upper spinal and many associated upper quadrant pain disorders.
